Message Alert System
The days of waiting patiently for the scroll of school names at the bottom of the tv screen or even listening to the long list of names on the radio are not necessarily the only way the school notifies parents and guardians of school closures or announcements. Although the school does still use the local stations for closure listings, they also have an Alert System that can make contacts via text message, voicemail, and emails. These messages generally concern winter weather. They are also used to notify the students, staff, guardians, and parents of those enrolled in the Deuel School District of other announcements. If you wish to make changes or additions to how you are contacted, please contact McKensey Konold at 605-874-2161 ext. 220 or email firstname.lastname@example.orgSo not only can you get text messages, voicemail, and emails, you can also find information on Dakota News, Keloland, and Facebook. This is available to all who have students enrolled in the district.
2022-2023 School Lunch Information
Update: Pursuant to the release of state reimbursement rates, Deuel School District has updated meal prices as follows effective immediately.
For school year (SY) 2022-23, families who may qualify for free or reduced-price meals will need to submit a free and reduced-price meal application. As you know, our district had some flexibilities during COVID so we could serve free meals to all students. That option has now expired, so we can’t serve free meals to all anymore. Instead, families will do what they did before COVID. Schools will take applications and use family income to qualify students for free, reduced-price, or paid meals.
There are still many ways children can get free meals. Children are automatically eligible for free meals if anyone in their household gets SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR benefits. We will alert you if your child is automatically eligible.
Children experiencing homelessness, children in foster care, runaway youth, or children of migrant workers all qualify for free school meals when their household fills out an application. Children can also qualify for free or reduced-price meals through an application if their household’s income is under a certain limit. You can find the latest income guidelines online at https://www.fns.usda.gov/cn/fr-021622 or contact us for more information. We will help you understand if your student qualifies based on the information you put on your school meal application.
Children who do not qualify for free or reduced-price meals may pay full price for a healthy breakfast or lunch at school. Even at full price, school breakfast and lunch are still an excellent bargain. You can’t find a similar quality meal for that low price at a restaurant or convenience store. Our school nutrition staff are dedicated to fueling our students’ minds and bodies for learning.
For other resources and food assistance programs, you can call the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Hunger Hotline at 1-866-3-HUNGRY (English) or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (Spanish).
The USDA has also released a list of frequently asked questions that may be helpful to you. You can access it online at https://www.fns.usda.gov/cn/2022-23-parent-faqs.
Please reach out with any further questions you may have. We’re looking forward to a great school year.

Return To School Plan
The Deuel School District will continue to work in collaboration with local, regional, state, and national resources throughout the school year to ensure the health and safety of our staff and students. Protocols and procedures may change quickly as conditions warrant. The District recognizes the importance of in-person learning, therefore will offer only on-campus classes for all students during the 2021- 2022 school year.
Deuel School Board supported a district wide strategic planning process to help to inform the Board about future goals for the district. The survey was conducted between mid-January and early February (2021). The data compilation from the surveys were shared with the School Board and administration at a previous school board meeting. Focus group meetings, involving both internal and external stakeholders were held to turn survey themes into goal statements and to devise action steps to accomplish the stated goals.
ARP ESSER Plan
The American Rescue Plan (ARP) Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund was established in response to the immense challenges facing students, educators, staff, schools, and districts in preparing for and responding to COVID-19. The funds are for a wide array of activities to address diverse needs arising from or exacerbated by the pandemic, or to emerge stronger post-pandemic. This includes responding to students’ social, emotional, mental health, and academic needs. Because of the unprecedented, one-time funding available to districts, the South Dakota Department of Education (the department) encourages school districts to invest the funding strategically. Investments should provide sustained benefits to students and positively impact the district long-term.
State of the District
The board and administration continue to focus on the Strategic Plan which was adopted in July of 2021. There are five main goal areas in this plan: Communication, Academic Success, Student Behavior and Support, School Pride, Parent and Community Engagement and Facility Updates. We will be conducting annual surveys to help measure our progress on the Strategic Plan. For example, this past spring we conducted the parent survey. Here is the link to the full report.
