Physical Geography is sometimes a struggle for me to teach. While I don’t find the subject overly interesting, I try to make sure that students are gaining an understanding of the content while keeping the environment in the room light.
Describe your teaching style.
I like group discussions and showing visuals in my classroom. I have found this to be a good way to touch on different learning styles as well as helping to keep students active in the classroom.
Describe your worst teaching day. What did you learn from that experience?
I came to school with symptoms that ended up being appendicitis. I thought that I could “tough it out” that day. I felt that I would be more effective in school rather than having a sub come in. While I made it to 3:00 (almost the entire day), I realized that I was not effective in my teaching. From then on if I felt too sick to effectively teach, I stayed at home.

The Next Generation science standards help students gain more independence and allow deeper thinking to happen about the world around them.

List five adjectives that describe you.
Kind, goofy, motivated, patient, and musical.
If you got to choose the grade to teach, what would it be? Why?
If I could choose any age level to teach and the subject, it would be middle school ELA/reading because I love books! It’s fun to see students get excited about a book they love and for me to share that with others is a lot of fun.
Describe your worst teaching day. What did you learn from that experience?
My worst teaching day would be the day that I realized that I can’t “do it all”. I learned that I need to take teaching one day at a time, one lesson at a time. I also learned to celebrate the little things.
What made you want to become a teacher?
I wanted to become a teacher because I love working with kids. I love to see how kids grow and learn over time and to be a part of that is a lot of fun. I was inspired by other great teachers in my life and the impact they had on me as a student was huge. There are many hard days but it is also a very rewarding career.
Tell me about a time a student or students had a lasting impact on you?
I have realized over the last few years that my students want to get to know me and if I am genuinely interested in them and want to get to know them, they will be willing to learn from me and we will get more accomplished. If we have a bad day we can hit the reset button and my students are really good at that. They are very forgiving. I have had students tell me that I am the best teacher and on that day I may not feel like it. It makes me realize that I am, hopefully, making a difference in their lives and in their learning on a daily basis.
How would your 10-year old self react to what you do now?
My 10 year old self had a completely different plan for her life! I think she would react with disbelief as she was planning to travel the world playing music for many people and not teaching kids like her in a classroom.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is having great relationships with my students. The conversations and interactions that are had during and between classes are priceless and I would not trade them for anything. I love seeing the growth in my students as well and how excited they are when they master a new skill is awesome!
How will you respond if or when one of your children struggles in class?
Patience is so important. To always remain patient because all kids learn at their own pace and if they are struggling with a skill or a class they need patience and understanding. That is what I will strive to give them at all times. I may be tough at times and ask a lot from them (I usually have high expectations) but I will always be patient and understanding.

Brooke Hockett
Interviewed by: Isabelle DeBoer
What college did you graduate from?
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from South Dakota State University and a Master of Arts from Grand Canyon University.
What is your degree in? What are your majors/minors?
My BFA is in studio arts with an emphasis in Art education. I also minored in Museum Studies. My MA is in Communication with an emphasis in education.
Where are you from?
I am from Toronto, SD.
How many years have you taught?
This is my 3nd year teaching Art, but I also taught early childhood for almost 2 years.
What is your position in school?
I am a JK-12th grade Art teacher.
Do you do any extracurricular and if so, what is it?
I am the prom advisor and art club advisor.
What was or is your favorite classroom activity?
My favorite classroom activities are anything hands on. I mean, it only makes sense that the art teacher loves to make things with her hands.
How do you remember every student’s name?
I don’t. I’ve gotten really close, but I struggle with elementary kids when I only see them once a week. The easiest way for me to remember them is by picking out a memorable trait or where they sit.
What is your favorite lesson/activity in your class?
My favorite kinds of activities are what I would consider process art with the younger grades. I provide them with the tools they need to explore on their own. There are no right answers, and they love the adventure.
What do you do to keep students engaged in your class?
I keep my students engaged by allowing them to guide their projects towards things they are passionate about. Not all projects look the same or even relatively similar for most of my students.
How would you handle a situation with a bully and another student?
I believe that bullies do what they do because of their own insecurities. In the art room, these insecurities easily come to the forefront for students that are insecure about their ability to create art. They are more likely to pick on those that don’t struggle. I have found it best to directly address the bully to identify how their insecurities can be worked through.
How is high school art different from middle school art?
I love middle school art. Middle schoolers, for the most part, still have the motivation to please teachers and do well. They haven’t lost their adolescent, creative brain yet. They get excited about projects easier than high schoolers and tend to try harder. With high school students, I have to give more direction to keep them motivated and out of their heads.
What is your average class size?
My classes range from 20-27 kids.
What do you enjoy most about your class?
I most enjoy the variety of age groups and topics I get to teach.
How would you handle an injured student?
It depends on what type of injury. If the student can be quickly removed from the classroom, I would go that route. If there is lots of blood, I would remove the rest of the class so I can address the injured student.

This is a hard decision to make, there are many things that I enjoy about the classroom. One of my favorite activities to see in the classroom is student collaboration. It is fun to watch students interact and work together to solve problems and even help teach their peers different strategies.

PK-5 Principal
Athletic Director
Do you do any extracurricular activities?
Being the athletic director I am involved in all the sporting activities that take place.
Do you like being a teacher or principal more, and why?
I do enjoy being the elementary principal. When I first moved into the administrative role, I really missed the classroom. I missed the everyday interaction with all the learners. I have adjusted and am realizing in the administrative role, I just need to do things that still allow me to interact with the learners on a daily basis.
I enjoy my principalship as it allows me to work with fabulous staff and other great administrators in the building. It also allows me to interact in a different form with learners throughout many grade levels.
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
This is a challenging question. If I had a superpower I would have the ability to heal the sick. Does this count as a superpower? If that doesn’t qualify I guess I would go with the ability to be fly.
Why did you choose to become a principal?
There are many reasons that I became a principal. I would say the main reason is that I have the best interest of learners as a key principle at all times. Helping put curriculum and practices in place that allow this is part of the principal's role. One of the key responsibilities should be to provide the learners of the school with a quality education that will prepare them for their future. For a principal to do this, they must know the needs of the teachers and provide the tools to educate the students in their classroom. The principal’s main concern should be the needs of the students to make them successful in the school system.
Was working at a school your dream job, if not, what was it?
My dream job like so many kids growing up was to be a firefighter. Being a teacher never crossed my mind until 5th grade. The teacher that I had that year (Mr. Arndt) was the major influence on me going into the education field.

Minnesota Viking - Football
Minnesota Twins - Baseball
Los Angeles Lakers - NBA Basketball (Magic Johnson Era) I no longer care for the NBA
Michigan Wolverines - NCAA Football and Basketball

What is your favorite food and why?
Steak - why not?
What was your favorite memory from teaching?
There are so many priceless memories from my 22 years in education, but one major memory and game changer for me came in my first year of teaching. I was teaching 4th grade. It was a very challenging class with many behavior issues. There was one student that I was really struggling to create a relationship with. There were some reasons for this struggle, but I needed a way to overcome the language barrier that was creating the struggles. In a conference with his parents, I was invited to their house for supper. I was hesitant to accept at first, knowing that it would be a struggle to communicate because of the language barrier that was in place. I accepted and thank goodness I did. It was a challenge at first to communicate during supper, but as the evening progressed, we were able to work out ways to get our concerns across to each other. It turned out amazing and I was able to learn so much about the student and his family. From that point on the student and I had a great relationship and were able to both grow as individuals. There are many times that I look back and think, how would that year have been if I would have said no to their invite to supper? Sometimes you have to place yourself in uncomfortable positions to be successful.
